WHY I CHOSE MEDIATION

I have been fortunate to have had a broad range of professional opportunities. Early in my education, I became interested in the law and the legal process, and explored many areas of practice, including criminal, family, real estate, and corporate law. Ultimately, I chose to focus my legal career on commercial litigation—the kinds of complex disputes that arise in the business world every day.

After spending many years in and around the courtroom, I became a strong advocate for finding commercially reasonable ways to avoid litigation whenever possible. Through thoughtful planning and, when necessary, alternative dispute resolution, I saw firsthand how parties could resolve disputes without the enormous cost, stress, time, and uncertainty that often accompany formal litigation.

At the same time, I developed a deep interest in understanding how businesses actually operate. Lacking a formal business education, I chose instead to gain real-world experience, which led me to step away from my law practice and begin a new career as a business leader—one I have pursued for more than 25 years.

Across my career, I have participated in hundreds of cases not only as a lawyer, but also as a judge, arbitrator, mediator, juror, and even as a party. This unique, cumulative experience has shaped my belief that mediation and arbitration can offer people and businesses a more effective, humane, and predictable path to resolution.
